The
Anatomy of the Ego:
By:
Rev. Philippe Matthews In part one of Anatomy of the Ego, we learned that the ego is nothing more than a neurological system of measurement designed to defend and maintain a point of observation or level of consciousness. In part two of Anatomy of the Ego, we learned the psychological composition of the ego, better known as Propriospect and Idiolect. This installment of Anatomy of the Ego will discuss the Five Neurological Operators of the Brain the ego comprises. Modern-day metaphysics describes the ego as something that controls us and stifles us from advancing to the next level in consciousness. In reality, the ego is nothing more than a group of operators in the brain that help us maintain our equilibrium and our current point of observation-better known as our current level of consciousness. Dr. Andrew Newberg is the Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, with secondary appointments in the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Religious Studies. In his book, Why God Won't Go Away, Dr. Newberg lists key operators, or functions, of the brain that make up the metaphysical concept of the ego, or homeostasis. These key operators are as follows. Verbal
Conceptual Association Area. This first operator that makes
up the ego allows us to name and catalog the world in which we live.
The Verbal Conceptual Association Area is: Causal
Operator. This
second operator of the ego allows us to ask how and why questions.
The Causal Operator: Apparently the Causal Operator compels us to use science, philosophy, and especially religion to explain the mysteries of the Universe. The
Binary Operator. This
third operator of the ego: Dr. Andrew Newberg who identified these operators said, "Whoever the first myth-makers were, they were likely set apart neurologically from the rest of creation by the presence and function of a well-developed parietal lobe. the parietal lobe is a crucial part of the brain's myth-making center. No brain lacking some kind of parietal area could think in terms of opposites, so it could not create the basic components of myths' structure." The
Existential Operator. This
fourth operator of the ego: The
Emotional Value Operator.
This fifth operator of the ego: Amazingly, the brain ensures that we will pursue survival intensely and passionately! To
